Thousands of Clinicians Evaluated for both Quality and Efficiency in Seminal Study

An increasing number of studies document a large and growing “value deficit” in the U.S. health care system. In the abstract, value can be thought of as quality per unit cost. Large health care purchasers, particularly self-insured employers, are beginning to demand evidence of value.

This project measured the clinical process quality and episodic cost efficiency of several thousand clinicians using a very large claim repository. The resulting relationships, shared by invitation with the leaders of the National Committee for Quality Assurance, The Leapfrog Group, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services are to be published shortly. The findings have implications for virtually all stakeholders of the health care system: purchasers, payers, providers, patients and policy-makers.
